“So, how about that weather”

Wow, what a change over these past few days when it’s come to the weather. Over last weekend I was wearing shorts, a golf shirt and my Birkenstocks. Mid week I needed a wind breaker and by the end of the week I was wearing a winter coat when I walked the dog. We’ve had colder temperatures, rain and even snow flurries. But alas, it is only mid April … and we have had snow for Easter and even one year on Mother’s Day. Five years ago we had a bad ice storm that was crippling especially for commuters.

I wonder, what would we talk about if we didn’t have the weather. And even more so, what would we have to complain about if we didn’t go through weeks like we’ve just had. But, in many ways, the unpredictable weather patterns are not unlike what we go through in life from day to day, week to week month to month and year to year. All too often, I know for myself I can find the things to complain about that aren’t to my liking. And, in the process I perhaps miss out on the joy that is equally an option to experience and give thanks for. That’s especially true of our faith … it’s easy to be a faithful follower of Jesus when things are going well in our lives and in the world; it’s more difficult when we face challenges and chaos that we have little if any control over.
