Restore to me the joy of your salvation

In my musings throughout Lent I am reflecting on Psalm 51 verses 10 to 12 … “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.” This week I will focus on the phrase … “restore to me the joy of your salvation”.

Well, we’ve made it; we’ve walked the journey through Lent and are now in the middle of Holy Week, the week of weeks in our Christian year as followers of Jesus. This week, we enter into the way of his passion which include stops along the way when we join Him in the upper room for the Last Supper; as we go with him to Gethsemane where he cries to God that He can’t do this and where he is arrested after being betrayed by Judas; through his so called trial as he appears before Pilate, the chief priests and scribes; as he is mocked and ridiculed; as he is sentenced to death; as he makes that walk through Jerusalem to Golgotha where he is nailed to the cross and where he dies on that cross; to accompanying Joseph of Arimathea as Jesus’ body is placed in the tomb and the stone is rolled in front to seal it shut. This is quite an emotion week as we don’t simply read or hear the story, but rather as we enter into it fully, knowing and trusting that this isn’t the end … there’s more to come as we watch, wait and pray.
